The Engagement

While in Hawaii for the first time (January 2003) Sam had the good sense to ask Claudia (officially, with ring in hand) to marry him. After several days of looking for an appropriate place, he finally found exactly where he wanted to propose: in the middle of the Kilauea Iki crater at Volcano on the Big Island. Unfortunately, he realized once they were down in the crater, standing over the steam vents (see to the right for a picture of Claudia in the crater) that he had left the ring on Oahu. A very intelligent move. After returning to Honolulu, Sam took Claudia walking on Sandy Beach, a particularly craggy (not sandy) and beautiful beach near her home. With the sun setting on the other side of the island, and waves crashing into shore, he got down on one knee on the sharp rocks exposed at low tide (which hurt) and officially asked Claudia to be his wife.

The picture to the upper left is of the beach where Sam and Claudia were officially engaged.  To the left is a picture of Claudia in the Kilauea Iki crater.
